Choosing the right Motorcycle Insurance policy is a lot like choosing the right motorcycle. It has to fit your needs, your lifestyle, and your budget. Just like with car insurance, the state of California requires that you carry a minimum amount of liability coverage if you are going to ride your motorcycle on city streets and state highways.
Many different factors will play a role in determining how much you will pay for your Motorcycle Insurance. Some things to consider that will affect your rate are:
- Your Age
- Your Driving Record
- Where You Live
- The Type of Motorcycle You Own (e.g. sport bike, cruiser, custom)
- The Age of the Motorcycle
- The Number of Miles You Ride Per Year
- Where You Garage Your Motorcycle
There are options available to riders which can help reduce their Motorcycle Insurance premiums.
Some of these options are:
- Take and Pass a Motorcycle Rider-Training Course
- Many insurance companies will offer a discount to graduates of motorcycle training courses like The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Course. This can be very beneficial, especially for riders who are age 25 or younger as they are generally considered “higher risk”.
- Maintain a clean driving record
- Find out what other discounts you may qualify for with the insurance company.
- Many insurance carriers offer a Multi-Bike discount.
- Riders that are members of motorcycle clubs or associations may qualify for organizational discounts.
- Mature Rider discounts can help experienced riders save money.
Now that we’ve talked about all the different factors that can affect your Motorcycle Insurance rate, the next thing to consider is the type of protection that best fits your specific needs.
There are many different coverage options to be aware of when considering the type of Motorcycle Insurance policy that’s best for you. It’s important to have a strong understanding of the different coverage options available and what they do.
The below coverage options are available on all motorcycle policies:
- Bodily Injury (Liability)
- Property Damage
- Collision Coverage
- Comprehensive Coverage
- Uninsured Motorist Protection
- Medical Payments
We will go into more detail below on each of these options, if they are required by law, and how they will perform in the event you are in an accident.
Motorcycle Insurance Coverage Details
Bodily Injury Liability
This covers injuries the policyholder may cause to someone else in the event of an accident. This protection is required by California State law.
Property Damage Liability
This covers damage that the policyholder may cause to someone else’s property in the event of an accident. This protection is required by California State law.
This covers damage to the policyholder’s motorcycle from a collision. The collision could be with another car, a building, fire hydrant, etc. This coverage is not required by California State law but may be required by your finance company if you have a loan on your vehicle.
This covers damage to the policyholder’s motorcycle that doesn’t involve a collision with another car. Examples of risks that would typically be covered include fire, theft, falling objects, explosions, etc. This coverage is not required by California State law but may be required by your finance company if you have a loan on your vehicle.
Uninsured Motorist Protection
This covers the treatment of the policyholder’s injuries as a result of a collision with an uninsured driver. Underinsured Motorist Coverage can also be included in a motorcycle policy. Underinsured motorist coverage is when an “at-fault” driver has liability insurance, but the limit of insurance is not enough to pay for your damages.
Also known as “Med Pay”, this covers the treatment of injuries to the rider (and passenger) of the policyholder’s motorcycle. This may include hospital and ambulance bills, as well as doctor visits and other necessary medical treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much Motorcycle Insurance do I need to legally drive in the state of California?
In the state of California you are required by law to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance to cover the costs associated with damages or injuries that you may cause in the event of a car accident.
The current state minimum limits are as follows:
- $15,000 for accident-related injury or death to one person.
- $30,000 for accident-related injury or death to multiple people.
- $5,000 for accident-related property damage.
If you cause an accident and are found “at fault”, the minimum Liability Insurance required by law may not be enough to cover the cost of injuries and damage that result from the accident.
In this case, YOU, as the driver responsible for the accident, would then be required to pay any additional bodily injury and/or property damage claims out of pocket. Depending on the severity of the accident, this could cause financial ruin.
It is imperative that you carry an adequate amount of liability insurance coverage within your insurance policies.
I work closely with my clients to make sure they are protected in the event of an “at fault” accident.
How can I compare Motorcycle Insurance quotes to make sure I'm getting the best rate?
As an “Independent” Insurance Agent, my allegiance is to my clients, not to any one single insurance carrier.
Because I work with the top rated insurance companies in the country, I compare insurance coverage and pricing with all of them at once, to make sure that my clients are getting the best insurance protection at the lowest possible rate.
In addition, there are NO FEES to my clients for personal insurance, so the only thing you’ll ever pay for is the coverage that you need.
What can I do to lower my Motorcycle Insurance costs?
There are many factors that contribute to the cost of insurance premiums some of which are within your control.
1.) First and foremost, the type of motorcycle that you drive will greatly affect the insurance premium that you pay. Some of the factors that contribue to the insurance rate of the vehicle are:
- Year of the motorcycle (newer motorcycles = higher rate)
- Features & Package (the nicer the motorcycle = higher rate) – Keep this in mind when considering “limited” editions or “touring” packages.
- Type of motorcycle (sports bikes, high end Harleys, and luxury motorcycles = higher rate)
To keep your motorcycle insurance premiums as low as possible, you may want to consider driving a slightly older (2-4 years from current year), or less valuable motorcycle.
Keep this simple rule in mind…The more your motorcycle is worth, the more it can cost to insure it.
2.) Another way to lower your insurance costs is to select a higher deductible for your comprehensive & collision coverage. Most people have been taught that they need to have very low deductibles ($100, $250 or $500) so that they will pay the least amount out of pocket if they need to file a claim.
While this is true, ask yourself how often you’ve paid this deductible and used your comprehensive or collision insurance. Remember, you are paying “extra” every month to have the privelage of paying a lower dedutible if the need arises
You may want to consider raising your deductible slightly higher and keeping more money in your pocket each month you pay your insurance bill.
3.) Drive safely…!! Remember, every ticket you get, accident that you cause, or any kind of DUI will raise your rates significantly. A clean driving record is the #1 easiest way to control your insurance costs.
4.) How many miles do you drive? The more you drive….the higher your insurance costs. See if you can scale back how much driving you do. Remember, the average driver in California drives 12,000 miles per year.
5.) When ever possible, always “bundle” your insurance products together. The savings can be significant.
