Auto Insurance is a serious matter. It can be the one thing that stands between you and financial ruin if you cause an accident, especially where injuries are involved. If you don’t have the right coverage options and limits, you could find yourself open to a lawsuit.
In 2013, California had a reported 156,909 injury collisions that resulted in 223,128 individuals sustaining an injury. There were also 2,853 fatal collisions resulting in the death of 3,104 people.
Bottom line, driving is dangerous and accidents happen. All we can do is our best to avoid them but we never know when we will be involved in one, or worse yet, cause one.
Understanding how auto insurance works is more important now than ever before.
As an agent, I empower my clients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their insurance.
Below I have broken down and summarized the major parts of an auto insurance policy to help you understand how it all works.
Please note that the state of California only requires liability and property damage insurance coverage to be able to legally drive your car on any freeway or city street.
If you have an active open loan on your car, your finance company may require you to carry additional coverage to protect their interest in the car in the event of a loss.
Auto Insurance Coverage Details
Bodily Injury Liability
This covers injuries the policyholder may cause to someone else in the event of an accident. This protection is required by California State law.
Property Damage Liability
This covers damage that the policyholder may cause to someone else’s property in the event of an accident. This protection is required by California State law.
This covers damage to the policyholder’s car from a collision. The collision could be with another car, a building, fire hydrant, etc. This coverage is not required by California State law but may be required by your finance company if you have a loan on your vehicle.
This covers damage to the policyholder’s car that doesn’t involve a collision with another car. Examples of risks that would typically be covered include fire, theft, falling objects, explosions, etc. This coverage is not required by California State law but may be required by your finance company if you have a loan on your vehicle.
Uninsured Motorist Protection
This covers the treatment of the policyholder’s injuries as a result of a collision with an uninsured driver. Underinsured Motorist Coverage can also be included in an auto policy. Underinsured motorist coverage is when an “at-fault” driver has auto liability insurance, but the limit of insurance is not enough to pay for your damages.
Also known as “Med Pay”, this covers the treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s car. This may include hospital and ambulance bills, as well as doctor visits and other necessary medical treatments.
Knowledge Is Power
Now that you have a better understanding about the different types of coverage available on an auto policy, you’re probably ready to find the coverage that’s right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much Auto Insurance do I need to legally drive in the state of California?
In the state of California you are required by law to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance to cover the costs associated with damages or injuries that you may cause in the event of a car accident.
The current state minimum limits are as follows:
- $15,000 for accident-related injury or death to one person.
- $30,000 for accident-related injury or death to multiple people.
- $5,000 for accident-related property damage.
If you cause an accident and are found “at fault”, the minimum Liability Insurance required by law may not be enough to cover the cost of injuries and damage that result from the accident.
In this case, YOU, as the driver responsible for the accident, would then be required to pay any additional bodily injury and/or property damage claims out of pocket. Depending on the severity of the accident, this could cause financial ruin.
It is imperative that you carry an adequate amount of liability insurance coverage within your insurance policies.
I work closely with my clients to make sure they are protected in the event of an “at fault” accident.
How can I compare Auto insurance quotes to make sure I'm getting the best rate?
As an “Independent” Insurance Agent, my allegiance is to my clients, not to any one single insurance carrier.
Because I work with the top rated insurance companies in the country, I compare insurance coverage and pricing with all of them at once, to make sure that my clients are getting the best insurance protection at the lowest possible rate.
In addition, there are NO FEES to my clients for personal insurance, so the only thing you’ll ever pay for is the coverage that you need.
What can I do to lower my Auto Insurance costs?
There are many factors that contribute to the cost of insurance premiums some of which are within your control.
1.) First and foremost, the type of car that you drive will greatly affect the insurance premium that you pay. Some of the factors that contribute to the insurance rate of the vehicle are:
- Year of the car (newer cars = higher rate)
- Features & Package (the nicer the vehicle = higher rate) – Keep this in mind when considering “limited” editions or “touring” packages.
- Type of car (sports cars, high end SUVs, and luxury cars = higher rate)
To keep you auto insurance premiums as low as possible, you may want to consider driving a slightly older (2-4 years from current year), or less valuable vehicle (mid-class sedans, pick-up trucks, compact cars, etc.).
Keep this simple rule in mind…The more your vehicle is worth, the more it can cost to insure it.
2.) Another way to lower your insurance costs is to select a higher deductible for your comprehensive & collision coverage. Most people have been taught that they need to have very low deductibles ($100, $250 or $500) so that they will pay the least amount out of pocket if they need to file a claim.
While this is true, ask yourself how often you’ve paid this deductible and used your comprehensive or collision insurance. Remember, you are paying “extra” every month to have the privilege of paying a lower deductible if the need arises
You may want to consider raising your deductible slightly higher and keeping more money in your pocket each month you pay your insurance bill.
3.) Drive safely…!! Remember, every ticket you get, accident that you cause, or any kind of DUI will raise your rates significantly. A clean driving record is the #1 easiest way to control your insurance costs.
4.) How many miles do you drive? The more you drive the higher your insurance costs. See if you can scale back how much driving you do. Remember, the average driver in California drives 12,000 miles per year.
5.) When ever possible, always “bundle” your insurance products together. The savings can be significant.
